READ ON ...

Preston FM is a community radio station that reflects all of Preston's many communities and gives everybody the chance to have their voice heard and get their message across. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

PRESTON FM

Preston FM is a community radio station (and charitable organisation), broadcasting on 103.2 FM and over the Internet, serving the city of Preston.

Our programmes, created and presented by volunteers, cover a wide range of topics,  styles and community arts, reflecting the city's diversity.

Skills development and volunteering opportunities for all.

Presenting, recording and technical skills are all covered in a flexible programme, which is offered free to volunteers. Opportunities to get involved in station management, administration and policy are also available.

Media support for local organisations.

Workshops and training programmes allow local community organisations to make better use of the media and new technology.

GET INVOLVED

Volunteer support is the key to the success of Preston FM. We are always looking for as many individuals and organisations as possible to get involved - both on-air and in supporting roles.

Maybe your group could spend some time making a programme about the issues that are important to you?

Perhaps you have great taste in music that you'd like to share with the world on your own prime-time show?

Whatever your interest, we can provide the training to get you started, and support you along the way.

We need new presenters, producers, technicians and journalists to get involved in this exciting community radio project. No experience is necessary - people of all ages and abilities are welcome.

Other opportunities for volunteers

1             Join our Community Reporters Team - covering news stories from across Preston and South Ribble.

2             Take part in our Youth Project's taster sessions and training courses for 16-25 year olds, running on various days through the autumn.

Maybe volunteering isn't for you just now? Here are some other ways you can get involved

Join our mailing list. Just send us an e-mail ( radio@prescap.co.uk) with your e-mail or postal address, and we'll make sure we keep in touch with all the latest news.

Send us your stuff. If you've got a great demo track, or even an entire radio programme that you've made, then send it to us to play on air.

Help us promote the project. Tell your friends, display a poster or distribute leaflets.

We can come and run a taster session at your community group, volunteer meeting or staff training day. It will give you more information about the project, help you to develop some programme ideas, and give you a taste of how radio is put together. Get in touch to arrange a visit.

Do you have what it takes to be a presenter on air?

We have courses for new volunteers 4-5 times a year, which are open to people interested in community radio.

We allocate places to make sure this opportunity is available to a wide range of people so that our volunteers reflect the full range of Preston's communities. We give priority to people from Preston and South Ribble.

What happens on the course?

You'll learn everything you need to know to produce a great radio show on 103.2 Preston FM:  everything from planning a show, learning interview techniques, making good features, getting technical with all the knobs and bobs in the studio, and setting up your own web page for your show.

During the training, you will also create a short practise show with your group. After making your practise show, you will then be teamed up with other volunteers from your course to make three monthly shows for our morning "Fresh On Air" slot.

What happens next?

After you have completed your "Fresh On Air" shows, you'll have the opportunity to apply for a regular show.

It’s completely up to you where you take it from here. You can continue making shows with us on a regular basis, arrange to do special one-off shows, or perhaps use your new skills to begin a career in broadcasting or presenting.

After completing a radio production course, you will also have the chance to get yourself an NCFE certificate in radio production (a well-recognised qualification equivalent to GCSE level).

We don’t tell you what to play or what to say, we simply give you the guidance necessary to create a fantastic show.

So take advantage of what’s on offer, it’s your community, your radio and your chance to express yourself!
