Background
Pontypridd Historic & Cultural Centre is a social history museum. Housed in a former Welsh Baptist chapel built in 1861 and which closed in 1983. The building is a particularly fine example of Welsh Nonconformist architecture and it was taken over by Pontypridd Town Council and converted to its present use , re-opening in 1986. The chapel's decorative wood and plaster ceiling, stained glass windows, pulpit and Big Seat have all been preserved while the magnificent pipe organ has been restored to working order and provides a striking focal point for the museum.
Directly alongside the museum is Pontypridd's most famous structure - the Old Bridge, which has stood since 1756. Entry to the museum is free apart from occasional special events.
The museum's permanent displays are found in the gallery and use working models, historic objects, photographs and audio-visual techniques to reflect the rich industrial, social and cultural heritage of the town.
Exhibitions
The ground floor hosts temporary exhibitions which change regularly so there is always something new to see. Many of these are by local groups. There is a small craft and book shop in the museum foyer as well as an information centre where details of local attractions, walks and places to stay can be found.
A meeting place for social groups
The museum is also the focal point for a large number of social groups which meet there. The local art, choral, history and theatre societies use the museum as well as the Women's Institute and WRVS. A wide variety of other craft and activity groups hold meetings there too. Rooms are available for hire by business or cultural users. Details can be obtained by contacting the museum.
