The current economic crisis is leading to many public parks and gardens, sports fields, children’s playgrounds and school playing fields in our towns and cities being used for building projects, turned into car parks or enclosed for other private commercial use and lost to posterity. For ease of maintenance, some green spaces are being paved over. This trend to deplete our urban green space, the lungs of our cities, in an era of global warming and population increase, is dangerous not only for our health but for our quality of life.
The petition below is being circulated around Europe to collect signatures to send to the European Commission asking them for urgent action to be taken:-
We, the undersigned citizens of the European Union, request the European Commission to urgently propose EU legislation to protect all urban green space including public parks and gardens, sports fields, allotments, children’s playgrounds and playing fields and also to guarantee continued public access to these areas.
We are aiming at collecting one million signatures and ask you to help. Please print out copies of the official campaign petition form and start collecting signatures.
