As a 1000-year-old former prison, Oxford Castle – Unlocked is no stranger to bugs and all things creepy crawly. This February half term, get up close to a selection of the world’s most unusual and fascinating creatures when ‘Bugs Alive’ worms its way up to Oxford Castle – Unlocked. On display will be some of the world’s most peculiar species, including terrifying tarantulas, massive Madagascan hissing cockroaches, giant African millipedes and an Emperor Scorpion.
The week’s activities include a picture bug trail through the ancient castle and prison, discovering which bugs would have kept the prisoners company during their stay. Children can also get creative, designing bugs of their own as part of a range of arts and crafts available in the prison gallery.
On top of the Bugs Alive series of activities, admission to the castle also includes a guided tour of Oxford Castle – Unlocked. A trip up the 101 winding steps of the Saxon stone-built St. George’s Tower, a descent into the historic crypt and a climb up the man-made mound (with breathtaking views of Oxford) offers a fun and educational experience for all ages.
Oxford Castle - Unlocked is open daily from 10.00am to 5.30pm (last tour 4.20pm). Visitors can book on 01865 260 666 or at www.oxfordcastleunlocked.co.uk
