I spent an interesting afternoon today visiting Sobell House Hospice at the Churchill Hospital.
Kelly Houghton, who's job is to organise fundraising events (amongst other roles and as part of a dedicated team) kindly gave me a tour of the lovely, modern facilities.
The atmosphere was serene; the building thoughtfully designed; the gardens looked beautiful even on a rainy day. A piano was being played in the Day Centre and all members of staff smiled and made me feel welcome.
Kelly explained the large amounts of money the Hospice needs to raise every year to supplement the contribution from the NHS. Part of the funds enable a variety of complementary therapies to be available including music and art therapies.
The Hospice has been used by adults of all ages; everyone is treated with as much dignity and respect as anyone could want. Changes are planned to introduce a drop-in cafe, to help the Hospice reach further into the community.
Look out for opportunities to support Sobell House Hospice including:
- the Moonlight Stroll on 10th July - over £100,000 was raised last year. Spaces are limited so do book soon to enjoy a sponsored walk through the streets of Oxford. Marshalls are also needed!
- later in the year will be a Gift Fair at Radley College - 20th & 21st November. With over 60 stalls, you won't need to shop elsewhere for your Christmas gifts!
