What's the story behind this Oswestry Olympics poster?

Bookmark and Share

With the Olympics coming next year and plans for an Oswestry Games in July 2012 being developed, you can feel the Olympic fever starting to build.

There's Much Wenlock with it's historic connection as the birthplace of the Modern Olympics.  Next year, there's even a re-enactment of the 1864 Shropshire Olympian Festival at The Quarry, Shrewsbury.

Now, in the midst of all this, it was mentioned that Oswestry too held an Olympic Festival during the 1830s.  Not much seems to be known about this, and it would be great to find out more!

In conversation with Shropshire Council about this, the poster below was sent to us as an interesting artefact of the time.  It certainly looks a little tongue-in-cheek.

But what was the story behind it?  What happened at these games in Oswestry?  Where were they held?
