The Museum of Dartmoor Life opened in 1982, following the fund-raising efforts of a group of volunteers, who gave much time and effort to turn a derelict building into the valuable resource that it now represents.
A former granary, Okehampton's Museum of Dartmoor life is fronted by a Victorian cobbled yard, and is home to three floors of exhibits, a Gallery where exhibitions and other events take place, and even a working water wheel!
Dartmoor is a unique habitat, and on first acquaintance may appear to simply be bleak upland punctuated by it's famous granite tors. There is far more to it than that, Dartmoor is a product of human use and exploitation, from prehistoric times to the present, the museum records the lives of those people, and how they lived.
A visit to Okehampton is not complete without viewing the Museum of Dartmoor Life, the Curator and staff are always on hand to assist, they welcome the merely curious and the historical researcher alike!
