I do a lot of camping (usually 5 or 6 months a year) manly on open grassy campsites, these often feel a bit hemmed in and can be very busy and noisy. So it was quite refreshing to camp in some woods on such a quiet site, with sites well spread out. It was a shame that I had to rush back and couldn't stay for the weekend. If I'm back in the area for any reason I'll definitely be back and I'll pass your details on to anyone else who may be.

We stayed here recently and despite the really bad weather we had a great time. The forest is beautiful. The owner, Greg, is very helpful, welcoming and friendly. The pub nearby is good and the food was nice. A really good peaceful, relaxing time. This kind of campsite is not for the people who like luxuries, unless you can bring them yourself. The toilets take a little getting used to unless you have been to festivals before. It is definitely for lovers of nature. The forest is full of wildlife to watch and there are lots of local attractions to visit in the car or on your bikes. Greg is very helpful at directions and has plenty of maps in reception. The firewood is really good value and makes for a nice evening sat enjoying several large drinks watching the flames dance. I cant really think of anything to suggest to improve the site as changing anything would spoil the appeal and charm of it. Definitely going back soon.

A really lovely site, with a very friendly and helpful owner, Greg. The weather was pretty bad for our stay. It rained at some point every day, but we still had a great time here. Greg even went to the trouble of erecting a tarp cover on our pitch so we could still sit by the fire in the rain without getting wet. The open fires are great to. They sell baskets of logs (all wood sourced from the forest itself) which last for a couple of nights. They also hire out cooking grills and sell venison burgers (very nice), sausages (didn’t try) and eggs (very fresh – they keep their own chickens). Cooking on an open fire in the evening was just brilliant. The site really is in the middle of no-where, and the no children policy means it’s lovely and peaceful. The showers are good. The toilet is a composting one, which does take getting used to, but as others had said, they are not as bad as you might think. There is a recycling area for rubbish, where the chickens will follow you in, hoping you will drop something. The site is in a forest. The Toilets and washing up are at the entrance to the forest. In the forest there is a main path that leads round in a large circle. Off of this path are smaller paths that lead to the individual pitches. This means each pitch is secluded. While we were there, the main path was very muddy in places, but this was due to the large amount of rain Devon experienced in the weeks before (and during our stay). We picked a pitch that was not too far from the entrance. There are a few pubs in the area to visit, and Oakhampton is not too far away. I fully recommend hiring cycles from Devon Cycle Hire in Oakhampton and taking a cycle ride along the Granite Way in Dartmoor, stopping off at the Highway Inn (most bizarre pub I’ve ever been in). I’d also recommend the half hour drive to Bude in Cornwall. Despite the miserable weather, we had a great time here and will certainly try and get back here in the not too distant future.

We have just arrived home from a week camping at Hole Station. I can only describe Hole Station as truly brilliant. On our arrival we were warmly greeted by Greg who showed us around the facilities including the eco-toilets, recycling area and washing facilities - all immaculately clean and well managed by Greg. The atmosphere at Hole Station was great. People are friendly and easy going. At all times we felt safe and around like-minded people. The surroundings combined with the people who run this site are what make it perfect! Quiet, beautiful woodland - we were visited daily by Robins, Minnie the cat and the rather cute dog. When recycling the chickens are keen to see what you are throwing away! We visited the local pub which was fairly well priced. Easy access to Exmoor and Dartmoor make this site appealing to walkers. Also Widemouth Bay on an evening is rather beautiful! If you like to camp in a place where you feel welcomed warmly, where it is quiet and truly beautiful - then this is the place for you. We will be visiting again next year and for many years I expect! Strongly recommended *****

Other reviewers have praised the peaceful, special place that Hole Station is so I shan't waste words, I shall simply agree with them. I had never camped before and so the rent-a-tent option was a perfect way to try before committing to buy. I was welcomed to pitch 13 by a very friendly owner who gave me a guided tour of the facilities. I had sole use of three tents (each sleeping 2) a covered, fully equipped cooking / dining area and a tarpaulin covered sitting space complete with fire pit. All was situated in a little clearing in the woods, private and sheltered. As a single female I was somewhat apprehensive about camping alone, however, I needn't have been. Hole Station is well off the beaten track and obviously attracts the sort of self contained people who enjoy their own company. The facilities are basic, granted, but they are kept spotlessly clean. Solar powered lighting in the washroom means dim light after dark, and an absence of electric sockets makes the hairdryer redundant so don't bother bringing one! If you would like to give camping a try and don't mind the lack of modern comforts (a positive as far as I'm concerned) then give Hole Station a try. For those who like clubhouses, late night parties, electric hook-ups and all the other fancy gizmos more commercial sites offer, this isn't the place for you. If what you seek is a peaceful, no nonsense campsite, free from the screams and shrieks of noisy children, then Hole Station may just be the perfect place. As a first experience under canvas, I loved it so much I've bought a tent!

The site was pretty easy to find and well set out, some of the pitches were secluded so that you couldn't directly see another tent and all are set within woodland. Weather was rubbish but a shelter was set up over the cooking area which made things much easier in the rain. A lovely site, nice and peaceful and we got to enjoy one clear night, never seen so many stars. Lots of birds and other wildlife (a toad made it's home in my boot one night and a mouse got to our chocolate!) We did bring your own tent and the campfire sets were really good, a tray of wood and kindling for about £6, lasted us four nights. Toilets were interesting, compost toilet not as bad as it sounds but took some getting used to! Luckily it seemed to be emptied regularly. Showers and kitchen areas were cleaned regularly, this was a wooden hut but with electric showers and hot water. Be prepared for the odd creepy crawly invading the shower block for a back to nature experience. No fridge for food but a freezer for ice blocks. Not really many amenities within walking distance unless you want to walk a few miles, but some nice pubs and a Co-op in Hatherleigh not far away. Bude was good for surfing, cornish pasties and cream teas. Overall would recommend and would go back. Much better than a field full of kids.

Date of Visit: April 2012 Unit: Tent Rating: Reviewer: Spickers 1 review from this member Excellent Easter weekend spent at Hole Station despite the mixed weather. The site layout is ideal if you are looking for a peaceful spot, not too close to other pitches and with plenty of space around you. We had a great pitch plenty big enough for our four man tent in a lovely little clearing in the wood. This is camping in the woods, pure and simple, no frills. It was Easter and the site looked to be full but in no way felt crowded, no waiting for loos, showers etc. Don't be put off by the eco loos, they were spotless and better than a lot of conventional campsite facilities. Greg and family were very friendly and efficient and it was useful that they sold sausages, bacon, milk etc to keep us going in the mornings. The walk to the Golden Inn is nice and it does good beer but the food was disappointing and the place was quite dirty. We walked on to the pub in Sheepwash which as very good and had a much more interesting menu - dressed crab, fresh fish etc. I'd recommend a lunchtime pub walk from Hole Farm - The Golden Inn - Sheepwash - Black Torrington - Hole Farm. Circa 8 miles. Will definitely be returning.

Date of Visit: April 2012. Had a wonderful stay here. A great place to unwind. We chose the rent a tent option and not only do you get a tent but a fully equipped kitchen/dining area. If you want peace and quiet and to wake up to the sound of birdsong whiling away hours In front of a campfire listening to the owls then this is the place for you. The owners sell boxes of firewood to get you started and we spent 3 lovely evenings by the fire pit. The site was full but as the pitches are well spaced out in the wood so it didn't feel crowded.

We have now stayed twice at Hole Station, the first time in 2009. The best thing about Hole Station has to be the woodland pitches, lovely and private! Since our first visit stone tracks have been laid through the woods to the pitch areas, a worthwhile improvement. Facilities are basic but do the job (the showers are better than ours at home), it's the eco loos that raise newbies eyebrows, but they work fine and there is no odour. The loo/shower block is always kept clean. We are keen walkers and cyclists, and there are plenty of nearby places to do both, the Tarka Trail, Granite Way on Dartmoor, and a public footpath with walks through beautiful countryside start at the site entrance. Liz the campsite owners wife lent us local OS maps which are kept in reception. Camp fire kits are popular and good value (ours lasted 2 nights). If you want a quiet time in lovely wild woodland surroundings the this site ticks all the boxes. Hole Station won't suit you if you want all mod cons, because there aren't any!

Just wanted to drop you a note to say what a wonderful time we had last week staying at your site for a few days. It’s such a wonderful site, and the changes you have made just add to our love for the place. The tarp on the pitch was brilliant, and having access to the lovely supplies, including the grill to cook on was great. Your place is a little bit of heaven, and the friendliness and hard work of you both just makes it perfect. Thank you and see you again next year.

What a great place to stay. We ejoyed it even having to leave our beloved camper parked in the car park and used a wheel barrow to take our bedding and food to our rent a tent with it's own dinning tent and fire pit in a wooded clearing. If you like a quiet peaceful place to stay it's here compost toilets and all . Just a short walk from a pub 15mins along the cycle path which is just outside the campsite. At night sat around a campfire with a glass of wine looking up to the stars what more can you ask for? We will be back there soon.

Reviewer: Mr & Mrs Mungo (3) Date of Visit: April 2011 Unit: Tent Hole Station is a unique place. A wonderful campsite to really get away from it all and go back to nature. Each pitch is individual and very spacious with plenty of surrounding undergrowth and woods to separate you from most of the other campers. The isolation and lack of noise highlights the melody of bird sounds which soon become harmonious with your stay. With a clear sky at night, the stars appear amazingly close and a pleasure to observe. The whole campsite is very clean and carefully arranged to recycle as much waste as possible. Campfires are encouraged and there is wood available to burn at a very good price. A short walk along the cycle track will take you to The Golden Inn, a lovely pub with good beer which also serves food. If you get the chance, check out the Dragon Archery down the road at Dunsland Cross. There is so much to do in the surrounding area on the northern edge of Dartmoor. We hope to be able to come back to Highampton and enjoy the experience at Hole Station again.

Reviewer: Cyclekitty (13) Date of Visit: April 2011 Unit: Tent Amazing campsite! We stayed for 2 nights passing through on a cycling trip. I wouldn't say it's for everyone as it's very low impact and basic but quirky and charming at the same time. There's only about 15-20 sites and you're quite far from your neighbours. The rent-a-tent sites look fun, as you get a small kitchen, table and chairs under a basic shelter, it has a colonial feel about it. The fire packs are good, you let them know in advance and they provide you with everything you need for a small campfire at your site. You can also buy local meat and eggs from them which is handy. The showers were great, much better than I was expecting, they're low flow but the temperature and pressure are still high. The composting toilets are novel but I imagine they'd make some people cringe. They've also got full recycling and composting facilities. It's really nice to get back to nature and to be able to do it in such an enjoyable way. Would definitely recommend it!

Your campsite brought back my childhood memory when we went camping and it's lovely to be able to share that feeling with my son even though it's a bit more modern now. Would definitely come back and your campsite has set quite a high benchmark for future campsites! Hope we left our pitch in a satisfactory condition and that you're happy with it. We're sorry we didn't get to thank you personally when we left. Keep up the good work and hope to see you again in the future!

by Jade Price Step off the beaten track into the wilderness, to embrace peace and nature at its very best. We all need space to breathe, away from the city, and camping is a special way to find that release. It allows us to live amongst nature and share the benefits of the natural world. Despite the UK being extremely over-populated, it still offers immense expanses of stunning wilderness. With breath-taking landscapes ranging from lakes to wooded valleys, and from lush dales to towering mountains, we can still escape from the busy to the peaceful. Camping in the wild has become difficult over the years, with the limitations on the increase. In England and most parts of Wales ‘wild camping’, which is unregulated tent pitching, is illegal. This is due to landownership and boundaries drawn across protected areas of wilderness. Scotland is more lenient and allows you to camp almost anywhere. Naturally, campers are expected to look after the site camped at, leaving no damage or evidence of your stay. Tents must also be pitched out of sight of houses and farms. It may therefore look as though camping out in the wild in England, away from crowded sites packed with bustling families, may be unobtainable. There’s good news on the horizon; there are one or two cleverly concealed camp sites that offer seclusion, peace and fresh air. One such place is Hole Station Campsite, located in a lovely rural area of West Devon. It is extremely private, only overlooked by the trees and a starry night. There are few camping spots available too, which means less noise and no crowding. The campsite is located off a quirky little country lane and offers its campers 45 acres of wild flower meadow and woodland. No ear-plugs required! (inspired times issue 8 spring 2011)

Reviewer: Charlie01 (1) Date of Visit: April 2011 Unit: Tent This site is great. We stayed here for two nights in April. We chose their 'rent a tent' set up and so glad we did. A huge bell tent that was clean and spacious (with inflated mattresses). Plus a three sided wooden deck with tarp covering in which a two ring stove and table and benches were in. Really well equipped. We only needed sleeping bags, pillows and provisions. There is a lovely walk to the local pub. The campsite sell free range eggs, pheasant and sausages. We ate in both nights taking advantage of this local produce. The place is very quiet, so quiet that even a small amount of noise can seem loud. Its not often you find places like this. The site has some interesting history to it, which you only really find out about if you ask the owners. The owners really leave you to your own devices after an initial welcome. Definitely recommend it.

If you go into the woods today your sure of a big surprise! Loved this place, a city dwellers adventure- camping out under the stars, campfires, four legged critters running about under the tent! Stayed here for 6 nights in our own tent although the 'hire' tents are well equipped and convenient. Everyone was really friendly and respecting the ethos of this ecocampsite. Yes, the toilet/washing facilities are a little different to the norm but trust me you do get use to it.Fresh eggs and campfire wood for a small charge. Great base for sight seeing in North Devon/Cornwall -National Trust's Castle Drogo and Lydford Gorge and the Tamer Otter Sanctuary are all well worth a visit. Beautiful beaches at Bude and Paidstow are not too far away.

This year we had a real desire to get back to a more natural ‘no frills’ style of camping and after some research booked a week at Hole Station Camp Site. What a good decision that proved to be. After the customary warm welcome we chose a secluded woodland pitch which easily accommodated our tent, dining shelter and the bivvy which our son built and slept in for the week. Where else can you ‘bring your own’ and ‘build your own’. Thanks again Greg for that. Whilst the toilet, shower and dishwashing facilities are basic they were always very clean and tidy. Any trepidations we may have had about compost toilets quickly disappeared, they were odourless and far cleaner than many traditional toilets we have experienced. In our opinion Hole Station has a lot going for it: small site, large pitches, quiet, clean, no cars on pitches, no play area/ball games, free range eggs for breakfast. The icing on the cake, however, has got to be the camp fires. Evenings relaxing around a fire with a plentiful supply of wood and a glass (or two) of wine rounds off any day perfectly. The fire pit arrangement works so well we now have one at home! This really is a place for slowing things down and enjoying peaceful quality time in unspoilt surroundings; a breath of fresh air – quite literally. We would have no hesitation in recommending this site to like minded people. We wish Greg and Liz continued success with this venture, please don’t change things too much and we hope to see you again next year.
