The Shudokan Academy really is an excellent place to learn aikido. With classes six days a week, evenings and daytimes, there's always one to suit your schedule, and there's always a talented instructor on the mat. Chief Instructor Ken Robson Sensei is absolutely dedicated to the very best aikido both for himself and every one of his students and staff. The large team of instructors means beginners get all the attention they require in those first confusing weeks while more experienced students don't miss out on the attention they need to help them progress. There's a continual focus on achievement, and regular incremental testing followed by detailed feedback which ensures everybody stays on the right track. Then as if that wasn't enough, Sensei Ken draws on his experience to develop effective self-defence exercises to bridge the gap between aikido in the dojo and the hopefully hypothetical need to defend ourselves on the street.

They welcome anyone who has the commitment and who genuinely wants to better themselves both mentally and physically. They are extremely patient and understanding, and as a nervous first timer they gave me the support I needed to grow and build my confidence. The teachers are outstanding! As someone that works from home I found the daytime classes suited me, but there is flexibility with it being a full time school to go in the daytimes or evenings. Training in Aikido with the Shudokan has made me a more positive, confident, person, and this year I am thrilled to finally be getting my black belt.

Aikido for myself is an ideal martial art and the instruction at Shudokan is also ideal. With a lack of ego within the dojo and a structured disciplined approach to training, focusing on the evolving art while dealing with the real life applications, have allowed myself to not only approach martial arts in a physical sense but also in a psychological sense. Yes, there are cheaper dojos around, but none that I've found that have the facilities of a full time, well staffed dojo with each Sensei having a slightly different personal approach to techniques, while also having many varying class times that allow myself to fit my training into my schedule.

My son Tom joined the Shudokan academy 3 months ago, he is 6 and by nature is a quiet boy who does not mix easily with other children. The Academy instructors made a connection with him instantly, it was not long before Tom was joining in all smiles and having a really good time. The change we have seen in him outside of the Academy after just 3 months is significant. I have been overwhelmed buy the professionalism of the school instructors and the individual attention they give, not only to Tom but all the children. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the benefits of their school go way beyond teaching Aikido, the school offers a very structured education in life skills essential in any child’s life. I've been really impressed by this dojo since I joined. The staff are friendly and professional and offer a very high standard of instruction. The classes are frequent and varied and the dojo makes a real effort to welcome people of all abilities.
