One very important difference between aikido and other martial arts such as karate, is that many of the 'fighting arts' are only about that - fighting.
Aikido has a much more balanced, ethical ethos, which combines spirituality with the more standard martial aspects of self discipline and physical techniques. Lessons are not simply to learn self defence and the art of fighting but to develop mental discipline, self awareness, consideration for others and healthy habits.

With 350 students enrolled, and three full-time and two part-time teachers, Shudokan Black Belt Academy is the largest aikido school in the UK and one of the largest in the world. Founder and owner, Sensai Ken Robson, is currently speaking to Nottingham council members in a bid to introduce aikido to school syllabuses and is keen to ensure that the purely self-defence martial art is not confused with other, 'fighting arts' such as karate.
