Mary Portas looks to save the High Street

Bookmark and Share

Queen of Shops', Mary Portas has announced her intention to create more vibrant High Streets across the UK.

Mary Portas has always been a champion of independent stores and with her Channel 4 series, Secret Shopper returning to our screens in the Autumn, she will be looking specifically at the growing problem of empty shops and how the rise of 'clone towns' dominated by chain stores can be avoided.

Mary Portas explains, "I am calling on businesses, local authorities and shoppers to contribute their ideas on how we can halt this decline in its tracks and create town centres that we can all be proud of."

It is great to see local initiatives like thebestof Nottingham's 'Buy Local' campaign to support independent retailers. This year Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail are teaming up with local retailers across the country on 4th July to celebrate Independents’ Day. Everyone is encouraged to buy at least one item from a local independent retailer and celebrate diversity on the high street. We will also champion the skills great independent retailers have and show the public that their local shopkeeper is not only a vital service, but someone who wears many hats; they are the accountant, sales assistant, buyer and often everything in-between. To get involved with this national campaign, you can download a campaign poster from www.skillsmartretail.com/independentsday, you can follow the campaign on Facebook and you can connect with us on Twitter www.twitter.com/retail_indieday. Many thanks all for your support report abuse...
