If you're planning a day out in Norwich and want somewhere restful, then take a walk around Plantation Garden, a beautifully restored Victorian garden. Although it does not feature amongst the big days out and attractions in Norwich, it is well worth an hour's visit - to enjoy it's unusual design, planting and general feeling that you've found one of Norwich's hidden gems.
Plantation Garden is a grade II English Heritage registered restored Victorian garden situated in Earlham Road, Norwich, not far from the Roman Catholic Cathedral. This amazing oasis should certainly be one of the attractions on a day out or if visiting Norwich
In 1856, a prosperous cabinet maker, Henry Trevor of Norwich, leased an industrial site just outside the old Norwich City
walls. Trevor spent forty years, considerable sums of money and much effort transforming a chalk quarry into a magical garden.
The garden is managed by the Plantation Garden Preservation Trust: a registered charity (no. 801095)
The Trust administers this Grade II English Heritage registered garden (actually owned by The Preachers' Money Charity, a 17th Century endowment) and is in constant need of contributions to enable its continued restoration.
This Victorian quarry garden is being painstakingly restored to create an amazing space, hidden away in the heart of Norwich, just a few hundred yards from the city centre.
Henry Trevor planned the garden himself, and the gothic fountain in particular is unique. The fleur-de-lys were cast at Gunton's brickworks near Norwich and the same pattern can be seen in the chimneys of the Queen's residence at Sandringham.
There was a grand 35-ft-long glasshouse, built by the Norwich firm of Boulton and Paul. The octagonal section was 29 ft in diameter. Inside were hot-water pipes and slate shelving: dismantled in about 1912, its whereabouts are unknown today
This tranquil Victorian garden has planting on differing levels and is a wonderful space to explore or simply sit and enjoy.
This attraction can be booked for events, and is a perfect venue for a wedding party photoshoot.
