Based in Earls Barton, Northampton, NVR are a long established business, headed up by owner Stuart West. Now Stuart is a local lad, born and bred and has been in the car business since he was a nipper. So much so, that most of his family have the automobile bug, as they are all involved in the trade in one way or another.
NVR are a happy bunch of chaps – again all local lads, many of whom have worked with Stuart for over 10 years. There are 10 involved in the business now; Jonathan Turner, Manager came directly from University; Darren, the Workshop Manager, keeps a beady eye on all his staff. NVR have a great team consisting of panel beaters, preppers and painters in the names of Kris Inns (the beater!), James Gronkowski (‘artiste’), Simon Shaw (painter extraordinaire), Chris Wight (prepper), Richard Butler (the prepper),Paul Watts (prepper) and Dudey Isles (the stripper! Yeah, baby)
Now what makes NVR special is that they are Landrover Approved and have been for 5 years now. What does this mean, I ask? Well to be approved, they have to attend Landrover’s Technical Academy for a certain number of days specialist training every year. They have a really close working relationship with Hartwell in Riverside and Marshalls of Bedford because of their expertise in the industry.
This approval and excellence expected from Landrover obviously spills over to their other work. They pride themselves in setting the standard for car repairing, which is exceptionally high. Jonathan explains ‘although we primarily specialize in Landrovers, the quality of our work is constant. We’re not like a production line – all of our staff take pride in their work which means that we don’t rush jobs through because we’re not bonus orientated. Our team usually repair or respray about 150 – 200 cars per month.’
To give you an example of the esteem in which they are held, they have sprayed small panels for The Blades aerobatic team at Sywell, did some paintwork for Eddie Jordan’s Formula 1 teamback in the good old days, and sprayed the Desmo Duo Duccatti 600 motorcycles for the Overstone based team.
However, NVR don’t just repair cars. They have 2 spray booths, one of which is large enough to cope with commercial vehicles. This is quite a find in Northampton.
When I took a look around the place, just off Mallard Close in Earls Barton, I was amazed at the amount of paint tints they stock and how expensive they are. Simon told me that one tin costs up to £300 and it usually takes up to 4 tins to do a total respray. Ouch!
A lot of their work is personal clientele – often it is cheaper to have a repair done personally rather than risk losing your no claims bonus from your Insurance company.
NVR are capable of all kinds of jobs – from repairing a chip or scratch on one panel to a total reshell of a vehicle. Take a look at what they did for Asda recently!
All in all, a really great team of blokes, with a great attitude to their work, their customers and each other.
