YOU CAN TAKE A HORSE TO WATER BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE IT DRINK!
Many Northampton businesses are feeling the pressure right now - we know, because we talk to them every single day! Most complain of working too many hours in their business, not making any money and not taking time out with their family. Added to this, the stresses of being your own boss - the buck stops with them!
'There's not enough hours in the day' is a comment that I hear every day from local businesses in Northampton. 'Business is tough' is another one. 'I'm knackered from working too hard' is also a familiar one.
So, here's the conundrum - we've invited Nigel Botterill down to Northampton to share his secrets of success with local business owners. Now this guy is one in a million. He's one of the UK's most engaging, prolific and successful entrepreneurs. He's the author of the UK's no 1 best selling business book 'The Botty Rules', he's build 6 £million + businesses in as many years. And he's being filmed by the BBC about his success in the Autumn. What this man doesn't know about building businesses is not worth knowing. We've invited him to Northampton to talk to local business owners, share the techniques that he's used to grow his own businesses and how to apply them to any business in any market sector.
Now, here's the thing - most business owners that I come across need help. They need help in many ways to catapult their business forward. Most of them know it. Most of them are interested in coming along to hear Nigel talk (and quite frankly, why wouldn't any self respecting business owner want to give up 2 hours of their time to listen to a man that's been there, done it and still doing it today), but there are a few rather bonkers business owners that don't 'get' it. One of the most ridiculous comments I heard was 'What time's it on?' '5pm - 8pm' was my answer 'Oh' she says 'I'm knackered by then, so I don't think I'll be coming'. What really struck me was that this lady has done the same thing in her business, day in, day out. Her business is looking tired, she complains of dwindling sales and not enough time in the day. Quite frankly, it's not that she's knackered - it's because apathy has set in and she generally can't be ***sed to change her routine. Some people seem to want to be stuck in the comfort 'rut' of complaining but doing bugger all about it. It's quite a depressing observation really.
The moral of this is 'complain if you want to' but don't complain and do nothing about it. I'm sure someone will listen, but it won't be me!
