'Dignity in Caring'
Southern Area Hospice Services is committed to providing a comprehensive Specialist Palliative Care Service to patients with Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neuron Disease and other terminal illnesses.
Its aim is to enhance the quality of life of patients by responding to their physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual and social needs, as well as supporting families and carers, thus enabling each person to live every day as fully as possible.
This care is provided without cost, to patients and their families from across the Southern Health Board
The areas covered by the Southern Area Hospice Services include: Newry and Mourne, Craigavon, Banbridge, Portadown, Armagh and Dungannon.
According to research, approximately 1 in 3 people in Northern Ireland will contract cancer at some time in their lives and 1 in 4 will die from it.

The Hospice receives many letters of appreciation for the care and support that it offers - the following is just one example :
"My GP referred me and I was given a place to attend the Hospice Day Therapy Centre on Tuesday, which has women and men visiting, all living with a range of cancers. On my first day, I was hesitant but eventually made my way to the door, I was warmly welcomed by another patient who told me I was in the 'right place' and showed me inside. In the Hospice Day Therapy Centre, there was a hive of activity, volunteers worked alongside the nusing staff and ranges of activities/ therapies were on offer: hairdressing, beauty, reflexology, physiotherapy and prayer, along with individual counseling and advice. Everyone is treated respectfully and individually with time for all, without judgment or prejudice.
For me, the Hospice was like a 'Safe Oasis', somewhere to pause, to rest, to regain confidence and learn to live each day with hope and purpose."

"If you have some spare time please consider to become a Hospice volunteer and try different roles, you will get so much satisfaction and a lot of rewards. You will feel part of a brilliant team and it's a great way to gain experience. Through volunteering, you meet a lot of people and form long-lasting friendships. My advice to others is not to always take, it is so important to give, as a little time means so much to others"
