Nigel Davies qualified as an Accountant in 1984 after starting his working life as a trainee accountant with British Steel in 1979, first at the Orb Works in Corporation Road and subsequently at Llanwern Steelworks. Later he became the Financial Director of a SME company within Lonrho Plc and then at HSBC Insurance Brokers, at Cleppa Park, Newport.
In 2002, he established his own Accounting Practice, which – as he puts it – is ‘not the normal way of doing things!’
“Most people in this business start life as an accountant with the aspiration of ending up as the Financial Director of an organisation. I went at it the other way around. On purpose!”
He explains: “I’ve had the real, hands-on experience and financial responsibility of running a business, so I know first-hand, what’s involved. Qualifying in accounting does not necessarily make an otherwise good accountant, a good businessman (or woman). Knowing the theory is one thing – the reality can be quite, and substantially, different.
My ‘past-life’ experience brings a huge additional benefit to my clients. There’s little worse than finding out after the event, that you should or could have done something differently in your business. I’m here to advise, assist, plan, protect and reassure my clients.”

Nigel is Newport born-and-bred, and has seldom worked outside of the area for any length of time, though with HSBC, he did travel back-and-fore to London quite a bit. In fact, he met his then future-wife in London - Cheryl, also then working for HSBC, hails from Sittingbourne in Kent.
“Cheryl was a qualified bookkeeper for years before we met. At HSBC, she was in charge of the company’s fleet of vehicles . . . . and as I had four (Yes, FOUR!) accidents in twelve months, we got to know each other quite well!” (Nigel insists that we include, “Only one of those accidents was my fault!” – Though we haven’t heard from Cheryl herself on this topic!) Three-months after the last of those accidents, Cheryl and Nigel became ‘an item,’ married in 1999 and now have two children. Cheryl has since resumed her bookkeeping career, in the business with Nigel.
Describing himself as ‘Quite happy being middle-aged...a young middle-aged,’ Nigel has nonetheless completed the ‘Three Peaks’ walk five times in recent years, in order to raise monies for charity, his quickest time recorded at 21-Hours! He’s also a member of Newport Golf Club (15 Handicap) and spends the rest of his spare time with the family and walking the dog.
Content? Yes! Complacent? – Never! “I still love the work I do; I still get a ‘buzz’ from it every day. I really love helping to put businesses on the right path and keeping them there. There’s always something new to learn.”
