In a Major boost for both the traders and visitors to the city centre, shoppers are now able to park free for the first 2 hours of their stay in council owned car parks.
This is just one of many projects that are aimed at bringing people into Newport and creating a thriving heart for the city.
The Kingsway car park, which boasts over 1,000 spaces has also extended its two hours free offer until 31 March (Mon - Sat 7am - 6pm) so there's plenty of choice around the city centre.
The new scheme was first introduced in the city's multi-storey car parks (Cambrian and Park Square) in December.
Now reduced charges are also offered in council surface pay and display car parks (From 31st Jan 2011)
A charge of obly 10p will apply for the first two hours.
Councillor Matthew Evans, leader of the council, said, "This is a major boost for the city. We are working hard with our traders to bring people into the city centre and create a thriving heart for Newport"
Councillor Ed Townsend, deputy leader said "We are committed to improving our city and this is a significant investment from the council to encourage people back into the centre.
"Exciting plans for a new city centre retail scheme are progressing well and we fully expect to have a partner on board this year. However we recognise that this won't happen overnight and by offering free parking, and other incentives we can help increase the appeal of the Newport until those key projects come to fruition"
The free parking will run on a trial basis with a review after three and six months.
The nominal charge of 10p in surface pay and display car parks was introduced to prevent significant delays and to eliminate the extra cost of a new ticket machines.
Current parking charges will continue to apply to stays over two hours and all council car parks will continue to apply to be free on sundays.
Business parking charges will also be unaffected by the new charges.
Free parking is the latest in a range of initiatives to improve our city centre.
- Plans to bring a new retail facilities to the city centre are moving forward
- Scarborough Development Group is redeveloping the Cambrian. This will see the construction of new offices, high quality retail outlets and car parking.
- A Year-round events programme aims to bring people into centre and includes specialist markets and seasonal events.
- A targeted marketing campaign and extended events programme has also been developed for Newport indoor market
- The councils business services team offers advice and support to people wishing to setup a business and has specific grants available to attract compaines to city the city centre
- Anti-Social behaviour has fallen in the city centre and the council has worked with police to reduce the number of incidents
