1. Google said net income in the third quarter surged 26% to $2.73bn (£1.74bn), up from $2.17bn in the same period last year. Earlier this year, Google launched Google+, a social network to take on Facebook. 

2. Figures released last week indicate that more people are remortgaging to raise money for home improvements so they do not have to move. According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), the number of remortgages in August rose by 30% compared with August 2010.

3. 17 to 20-year-old male drivers have seen an 8.2% annual rise in premiums to £3,878 whereas the average price for all male drivers in total was £1,006. 

4. The analogue television broadcasting system will be turned off on the 24 October 2012. So far two thirds of the UK have changed to digital TV and people who do not subscribe to satellite or cable services have had to buy new televisions or set-up boxes to continue watching programmes.

5. A new report revealed that 68% of Premier League income spent is players' wages and total Premier League revenues are over £2bn. However, operating losses in the top four divisions outstrip the Premier League's profits and total losses for the 92 league clubs now stands at £600m with collective club debt of £3.5bn.

6. One in 12 hospital meals – nine million a year – are returned uneaten, costing the NHS more than £22m?

7. It was a bad week for BlackBerry, after a fault in a single data centre in Slough caused several days of disruption. Millions of BlackBerry users were unable to to use the internet, email, or send messages – prompting calls from investors for the company to be sold or broken up. 

8. Paul McCartney is the most commercially successful songwriter in the history of pop music, with the sale of more than 100 million singles. Apple Corps - the business founded by the Beatles in 1968 – recorded £15.3m in profits on sales of nearly £51m last year.

9. There were more people in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday to watch the Wales v France World Cup semi-final on video screens than there were at the actual match in New Zealand.
