St Nicholas Cathedral, Newcastle City Centre
St Nicholas Cathedral is one of the smallest cathedrals in the country, and the most northerly.
The cathedrals long history began with the building of a parish church soon after the building of the castle by Robert, William the Conqueror's eldest son in 1080. The first wooden building was replaced with stone during the twelth century and by the end of the fifteenth century the church has been altered and extended considerably but was more or less as it is today. The change from a parish church to a cathedral didn't take place until 1882 when Newcastle became a seperate diocese from Durham.
