Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum
What is Segedunum?
Segedunum (meaning strong Fort) is the most excavated of the 17 forts that once stood along Hadrian's Wall and now includes a large interactive museum and a 35m high viewing tower giving the visitor outstanding views across this World Heritage Site.
Segedunum was originally built as part of the 'mighty frontier system' that the Emperor Hadrian ordered to be built across the entire breadth of Britain in AD122 to defend the Roman Empire in the South of England from the barbarians in the North.
This 'mighty frontier system' is now known as Hadrian's Wall and once stretched for 73 miles from the River Tyne in the East to the Solway Firth in the West and is now a World Heritage Site. Segedunum was an important part of the frontier as it stood guarding the eastern end of the wall for almost 300 years and housed 600 Roman soldiers.
This very popular museum offers a fascinating insight into the life of a Roman Soldier and hosts interactive exhibitions which change throughout the year.
