The Uk's leading learning disability charity

In 1946, Judy Fryd – whose daughter Felicity had a learning disability – wrote a letter to Nursery World magazine. She wanted to tell other parents about the lack of care and support available. Judy set up a network, putting parents of children with a disability in touch with each other. This network soon developed and grew into the charitable organisation MENCAP.

The Mencap charity is now the leading UK charitable oraganisation working with people with a learning disability, their families and carers. 

The Mencap charity in the North East, with offices in Newcastle city centre, campaigns on key issues to help ensure that people with a learning disability and their families and carers get equal rights and better opportunities.  As a charity we are here to fight for a world where people in the North East with a learning disability are able to:

• have as much independence as possible
• find decent, well-paid employment to suit their skills and abilities, or have interesting, meaningful activities to do if they can’t work
• take part in community activities
• live in a home that meets their needs, with the right support.

There are over 52,000 people with a learning disability in the North East, of which 20,000 are Children.  We rely on donations for our charitable work.  Every donation and penny raised in Newcastle and the North East stays in the North East.
