Welcome to The West Berkshire Museum, Newbury

The West Berkshire Museum, Newbury

The West Berkshire Museum, Newbury allows visitors to take a step back in time to see the history of Newbury and the surrounding regions of Berkshire. Newbury was a small market town with significant strategic value; hence it has been the scene for many historic battles over time.

The Museum in Newbury is situated in the old Wharf area, based in two of the oldest buildings in Newbury.

The Cloth Hall was built in 1626 by Richard Emmes of Speenhamland, Newbury originally as a cloth factory, however over the years it has been used for a variety of purposes including a workhouse, school and hospital.

The Granary was built in 1723 as Newbury became an important inland port when the River Kennet was opened for transport and was used as a grain store right up to the twentieth century.

The Museum in Newbury was opened in 1904 and was called the Museum of Antiquities and Natural Curiosities. The Museum was extended in 1934 and again in 1985 opening up more galleries in the Granary Building.

The West Berkshire Museum, Newbury has been operated by West Berkshire Council since 1998.
