MKFM IN BID FOR FULL TIME FM LICENCE

As part of their application, MKFM are calling for the public to show their support by posting a message on their website, MKFM.COM.

The messages will be used by Ofcom to gauge the level of demand from MK residents for the service.  Ofcom will also consider other factors such as their ability to maintain the service and whether it broadens listener choice.

MKFM was started by the former management team of Horizon Radio and their team of volunteers have supported over 500 local community events since 2011.

The radio station provides regular local news, travel and sports reports, community features and support for local music, business and charities, as well as offering professional radio experience for hundreds of volunteers.

MKFM has over 16,000 facebook fans and official audience figures showed 84,000 listeners tuning in to MKFM every quarter.

City MP Iain Stewart helped to bring forward the opportunity for MKFM to apply for an FM licence after calling a parliamentary debate earlier this year on the licensing system which led to Ofcom taking the unprecedented step of re-drawing the region boundaries to enable Milton Keynes applications to be considered sooner.

MKFM Programme Director Chris Gregg said: “I started MKFM with a simple mission - to bring local radio back to Milton Keynes on FM.  Since 2013 we've been broadcasting on DAB but now we can finally apply to broadcast full time on FM”

Applications for Community Radio licenses must be submitted to Ofcom by early December and decisions are expected during 2015.
