The “Fit for Work” option has been removed from new Sick(Fit) Notes

The GP can include additional advice on the sick note, suggesting minor changes to the job role, which would allow the employee to return to work earlier.  Additionally the GP can offer advice on the impact of the illness or injury.

The option of “fit for work” has been removed following discussions about the GP’s ability to recommend that the employee is fully fit for work if they are not aware of the exact duties of the job role.

Research has shown that long periods away from work can have a detrimental effect on the health of your employee, from both a physical and mental perspective.

It is still believed that the new “Fit Note” will still encourage employees back to work sooner, which will also assist with the health of the employee and benefit the organisation through the employee continuing to contribute to the success of the business.

If the GP has ticked the box “may be fit for work”, it will be necessary for the employee and employer to discuss the feasibility of changes to work and the benefit they will bring.

If the employees’ condition constitutes a disability under the current Disability Discrimination Act, the adjustments made will need to take additional considerations into account.

Parliament will consider the system once more before 6th April 2010 and an additional inclusion may be added, which will reduce the maximum length of time that a GP can issue the fit note – from six months to three months.
