Kettlebells are best described as a cannonball with a handle, typically made from iron they are hard and unforgiving.
Used by the Russians for hundreds of years they are now here in the UK and available to the masses. Be warned though, training with a kettlebell will deliver an unsurpassed cardio and strength workout at the same time and you’ll be left wondering how the Russians lost the Cold War.
It’s the kettlebell design, not the weight, which makes it such a devastating training tool. The centre of mass is outside the handle, therefore when it’s moved around the body; the user has to absorb extra forces to control it. Absorbing these forces and generating more is what gives kettlebell training its huge results.
Some of the benefits of kettlebells training include:
v Fast results, whatever your goals
v Burn fat, up to 1400 calories in an hour
v Improved strength
v Improved power
v Improved core strength
v Improved coordination
v Improved flexibility
v Reduced lower back pain
Kettlebells are now widely available, more and more gyms are starting to have them and they can be bought online from numerous shops.
As with any other piece of equipment, the kettlebell is only as effective as its user. To really benefit from the kettlebell you need to be taught and shown good technique. The best way to do this is through a qualified instructor, whether it be one to one or as a group in a kettlebell workshop.
On Sunday 8th a beginner course to kettlebells is being run in Newport Pagnell near Milton Keynes. This course is designed for complete newcomers to kettlebells, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve been weight training or not. Kettlebells are different!
