The amount of claims for unfair dismissal, redundancy pay, failure to inform and consult on redundancies and unfair redundancy selection processes have all increased over the past year, due to an increase in the level of redundancies and employers not seeking professional advice in the procedures to follow.


Figures obtained by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) revealed that the median time for claims, from acceptance to a first hearing, was 18.1 weeks for a single claim and 18.5 weeks across all claims.

This causes additional problems for business by having a negative effect on the moral of the remaining employees, by allowing the disgruntled employees more time to find grievances with their employer and by costing the Company more in legal fees.

It also causes additional problems for the redundant claimants, who may not have found another job in the meantime and are struggling financially.
