Last week I attended a Literary Lunch at The McDonald Compleat Angler, Marlow. The speaker was Barbara Taylor Bradford and it was a fantatstic event. The food was superb and the setting of the Bowaters restaurant overlooking the River Thames on such a glorious day was perfect.
The next literary lunch with guest speaker Ian Manners, former brother-in-law of US President Barack Obama, is taking place at the Macdonald Compleat Angler Hotel, Marlow on Tuesday, 9th November in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Enjoy drinks at the bar before sitting down to the two-course set lunch at 12.30pm with coffee and a glass of wine (vegetarian option available). All proceeds from the lunch and raffle will go to Macmillan.
Ian Manners was married to Barack’s elder sister Auma with whom he has a daughter, Akinyi, now 13 years old. After travelling to Kenya with Auma in 1990, he was inspired to write his first book, Where Do I Belong? which was published in 2002. This was followed by Unfinished Business in 2007, a story set in Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. Ian’s latest book, Our Brother Mr President, is about Barack’s younger brothers and the differences and lack of opportunities in their lives having been brought up in Kenya.
After lunch, in the Bowaters Restaurant that overlooks Marlow Weir, he will be signing paperback copies of his books, which are priced at £6.99 each; 50% of all sales on the day will also be donated to Macmillan.
Ian, whose parents were both counselled by Macmillan nurses, is a great supporter of the charity. He now lives in Warfield, Berkshire with his partner Vivian and their two children, Geoffrey and Esther.
To book tickets, which are priced at £28 per person to include lunch with coffee and a glass of wine call Bowaters Restaurant at the Macdonald Compleat Angler on 01628 405406, www.MacdonaldHotels.co.uk/CompleatAngler.
