Are you a Dragon?
Recent Dragon years are 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988 and 2000. Far from being the vicious mythical beast Western folklore would have us slay, the Chinese hold the Dragon in high esteem, a symbol of power and good fortune, and as such those born in Dragon years are honoured and respected.
If you were born under the year of the Dragon consider yourself innovative, enterprising, self-assured and passionate (so THAT'S where Dragon's Den came from!) and this year is predicted to be one of change and rejuvenation with a promise of good fortune and happiness. Well I'm happy to go along with that!
Certainly what I will be going along with, or rather to, are the celebrations taking place next weekend in Manchester city centre. Starting on Friday 27th January with a Variety Show by the Chinese Art Troupe at Manchester Central Exchange Auditorium, this spectacular show features music, dance and acrobatics.
Then on Sunday 29th January, make your way down to Chinatown and Albert Square, where you'll find an abundance of stalls, dragon parades and traditional performances from 11am to 7pm. Witness a spectacular fireworks display from around 6pm and what is rumoured to be the most spectacular high pole lion dance in the UK.
This weekend promises to emphasise all that is good about our multicultural society, and with Manchester boasting some of the finest Chinese restaurants in the country what better time to step out and enjoy a weekend of all things Oriental!
