As Bonfire Night is almost upon us we at thebestof manchester wanted to share some simple safety tips to help your celebrations go off with a bang!

It is also worth mentioning that it's better to try and get to an organised display if you can - they're safer, have more to do and are less stressful for pets and wildlife. Manchester has no shortage of fireworks displays happening this year - check out our blog post to find out what's on and where!

Don't forget you can also add your own sparkling Bonfire Night events to our website - for free!

Fireworks are beautiful to look at and undeniably entertaining for the whole family, but it is also important to know that they can very dangerous when handled incorrectly. By following The Firework Safety Code you can ensure that your Bonfire Night celebrations are remembered for all the right reasons.

The Firework Safety Code

  • Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 and make sure you purchase from a reputable shop with knowledgeable staff
  • Please do not drink alcohol if setting off fireworks. This is obvious but unless you want to feature in the next edition of the Darwin Awards it's a must
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box to store
  • Closely follow instructions on each firework
  • Light fireworks at arm's length, using a taper and stand well back!
  • Never go near a firework that has been lit - even if it hasn't gone off it could still explode
  • Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them! Again, this is very obvious but we all know there are individuals for whom warnings such as "Caution: Coffee is Hot!" are necessary!
  • Keep pets indoors
  • Always supervise children around fireworks

Sparklers

Sparklers can be very pretty and are undoubtedly part of the experience of Bonfire Night. However, I wanted to share this fact with you - they're actually five times hotter than cooking oil when lit. So, it's best to treat sparklers with an equal amount of respect to fireworks and follow these safety tips to help you enjoy your evening without any drama.

  • Light sparklers one at a time
  • Always wear gloves when handling sparklers
  • Never give a sparkler to a child under the age of 5

Just one more thing - thebestof manchester wishes everyone and happy (and safe!) Bonfire Night, whatever you decide to do!
