Get your Car winter ready
It's getting cold outside!! The last two winters we've seen widespread snow and ice with temperatures falling below -10C. Just as you need to prepare for the colder weather with a warm coat, hat and scarf, so does your car. Follow ten simple steps to get your vehicle ready and stay safe this winter.
- Battery - Avoid the most common cause of winter break down and get your battery checked and replaced if necessary.
- Tyres - Check your tyre tread. It should have at least 3mm for driving safely in the winter. Also check your tyre pressure every 2 weeks and make sure your spare tyre is in good shape too.
- Anti-freeze - Regularly check your coolant level and top up if required with a mixture of the right type of anti-freeze. Your mechanic should check the concentration to make sure it has adequate cold temperature protection.
- Windscreen - Replace and wiper blades that need changing and fill your washers with wiper fluid (not just plain water as it will freeze). Make sure your windscreen is clean inside and out.
- Lights - check and clean all you car's lights to make sure you can see and be seen. Carry spare bulbs just in case.
- Locks and Door Seals - stop your doors freezing by putting a thin coat of vaseline or polish on all the rubber seals. Squirt some WD-40 in your locks to stop them freezing.
- Breaks - Get your mechanic to check that your breaks are working properly.
- Heater & Defroster - make sure your heater and defroster are in good working order to make sure you can see and keep warm.
- Scheduled Service Appointments - Now more than ever it's important that you keep any regular service appointments.
- Fuel - make sure you always have at least 1/4 of a tank of fuel in case of unexpected delays.
