Tuesday’s news that inflation has fallen was as big a surprise to the economists as it was to me – in other words no one’s really noticed that the cost of living has dropped! However, this latest figure would seem to be somewhat artificial since retailers have been slashing prices on their own initiative to encourage people to buy even the most essential items. Further, according to the so-called experts inflation is likely to rise again later in the year. So, as promised in the previous “money saving” blog, I see no reason not to pass on some cost cutting tips whether at home or out and about in and around Maidstone.
There are lots of very easy ways to reduce household bills with the added benefit of doing your bit for the environment!
With the glorious weather we’ve been experiencing lately and the high cost of fuel you may already have turned your heating off altogether. If this is not the case and a tip for next winter, try turning it down a bit. Most people have their thermostat set at 22 degrees centigrade so try setting it at between 18 and 21 degrees and dressing a bit more warmly – you will save money!
Insulating your hot water cylinder which, let’s face it, is on all year round, is a top tip for reducing washing costs be it clothes, dishes or people!
Resist using the tumble dryer if you can! Take advantage of the improving weather conditions and string a line up outside for fresher smelling clothes!
Don’t leave lights and electrical appliances on! If you’re not using something switch if off and make sure everyone else in the house does as well!
You could also look at paying your energy bills by direct debit or on the internet as some companies offer deals on this and others may even add a penalty charge if you don’t. Or you could switch provider by shopping around for the best prices – companies that supply both gas and electricity may also be cheaper.
Search out landline and mobile telephone companies with the best rates and also look for the most cost-effective satellite and cable TV packages. These can often be combined.
When it comes to insurance you don’t have to accept the renewal price quoted by your existing insurer. Again, look around for the best deal and switch insurance companies if it’s better for you.
Going out in the Maidstone area doesn’t have to cost a fortune either while staying in can be just as much fun and a great deal cheaper! There are internet sites where you can find money off vouchers and deals for restaurants and bars squaremeal.co.uk is just one.
Don’t go to the pub and spend a fortune on marked-up booze! Buy cheaper drink and a few nibbles at the supermarket and invite some friends round to party the night away. They’ll be no last orders either! Alternatively, get a DVD and watch a film from the comfort of your own sofa with your own snacks and sweets – forget the unhealthiness!
Many attractions, fun parks and cinemas also do cheaper deals with 2 for 1 offers. Snacks and sweets at the cinema can also be astronomically expensive so either sneak your own in or look upon it as an opportunity not to fill yourselves up with unhealthy treats!
If you love reading but don’t want to spend a fortune on books join a library! This way you might also keep your local library open when it may be due for closure.
With the cost of fuel as it is give some serious thought to travel costs. If you live near a work colleague offer to drive them or take public transport. Cycle to the station, get fit and save money on parking!
When driving don’t waste fuel! Ensure your tyres are correctly inflated, that you’re in the right gear and that you accelerate and brake smoothly. Don’t drive around with unnecessary heavy objects in the boot or a roof rack you don’t need and switch off the air conditioning this will save energy as well as money!
If you’ve got lots of old stuff laying around that you don’t use anymore but think someone else may find useful why not sell it? The internet is a good place to start, but if you fancy a day out in the open air a car boot fair is always a fun place to be! Check out car boot fairs in and around the Maidstone area on the blog page at thebestofmaidtone.co.uk.
Hope this is useful
Until next time
