Web petition against 50% business rates hike
A huge hike in business rates is being fiercely opposed by Maidenhead and District Chamber of Commerce, Windsor District Chamber of Commerce, Eton Traders’ Association and the town partnerships in both Maidenhead and Windsor and Eton. The Royal Borough, and leaders of the four political groups have come together with local chambers of commerce to launch a petition urging the government to reconsider.
The increases, which will start from April next year, will mean financial hardship for many local businesses already experiencing tough times because of the recession. Some will face increases of more than 50%.
The petition reads:
We oppose the huge increase in business rates for 2010/11. The economic and financial situation has changed dramatically since the business rental valuation was assessed in April 2008 for implementation in 2010/11. This 50%-plus rise in business rates will cause hardship for businesses and we urge the government to review the situation in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) to allow growth during the economic downturn.
