Over 2.6 million people across five counties and beyond benefit from the cover of our two local sister air ambulances, Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) and Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA).

DLRAA is based at East Midlands Airport and took over from the previous service, County Air Ambulance, on 1 April 2008. DLRAA's primary response area is the 2,100 square miles of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, servicing in excess of 1.4 million people.

WNAA is based at Coventry airport and was established in 2003. WNAA's primary response area is the 2,000 square miles of Coventry, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes and some of the key border areas like Market Harborough, Banbury and Solihull, servicing a population of around 1.2 million people.

Although each helicopter and team is dedicated to its own area, they support each other in many ways. They work in tandem at major incidents where more than one casualty needs urgent medical attention, or, if one service is busy on a mission the other can fly across and provide emergency treatment.

Together and separately the additional skills of the crews provide life saving treatment and medication on site and en-route to hospital. Normally a patient would only benefit from advanced analgesia and anaesthetics in the A&E department, however, WNAA and DLRAA have the skill set and resources to manage the patient on scene, getting senior doctors and consultants to the scene of incidents as quickly as possible and conveying patients to specialist hospitals that can help specific injuries, not just the nearest hospital. Quite often this early intervention can make the difference between life and death

No Government or National Lottery Funding!

Both DLRAA and WNAA are registered charities, and are separately funded totally by public donations, fundraising activities and sponsorship. However, they are run by the same operations team and board of Trustees. This dual management means that both the services benefit from collective expertise and lower running costs.

The average cost per mission is around £1,400 and the annual basic running cost of each service is over £1.7 million. Currently only able to operate in daylight hours due to the restrictive leasing costs of flying at night, DLRAA and WNAA aim to become the first service in the UK to operate 24 hours per day.

These are YOUR local air ambulances, please support them!
