The UK holiday centres market is worth an estimated £364 million and growing (Mintel 2010).
The UK holiday parks industry generates £3.06 billion of tourism spending per annum. This represents 14% of Britain’s entire tourism economy.
In the UK there are approximately 4,000 holiday parks, 498,000 touring caravans, 112,000 motor homes and 335,000 caravan holiday homes (210,000 privately owned).
Holiday trips outside the UK fell 15% from 2008 (46 million) to 2009 (38 million); the largest drop in 25 years.
In the 3 years up to the beginning of 2010, the number of nights spent by tourists in catered holiday accommodation in the UK grew by a modest 1.3% to 313 million. The nights in self-catering accommodation grew 20% to 20.8 million.
The higher social groups (ABC1s) and people aged 55 and above are spending increasing amounts of money on domestic holidays whereas other demographic groups are fairly flat in their spends.
