Singing for the Brain Volunteer

Singing is not only an enjoyable activity; it can also provide a way for people with dementia, along with their carers, to express themselves and socialise with others in a fun and supportive group.

Hidden in the fun are activities which build on the well-known preserved memory for song and music in the brain. Even when many memories are hard to retrieve, music is especially easy to recall.

As part of this role you will:

  • Help set out the room in an agreed layout.
  • Welcome and talk with people with dementia and carers of people with dementia.
  • Support the group leader by issuing song books, starting off songs/ movements and encouraging participation.
  • Make and distribute beverages and other refreshments, collecting in and washing up.
  • Tidy up the room after the session.

Is this role for me?

  • The role may be suitable if you:

• Have experience of and an interest in music and movement.

• Are committed to inclusion, treating people from all backgrounds with dignity.

• Have a knowledge of, or a willingness to learn about, dementia and its impact on people.

• Have good verbal communication skills.

This is a weekly group that runs for 30 weeks of the year in 6 week blocks. The sessions last for 2 hours.

Location: Lichfield
