Situated in the heart of the Cliffe area of Lewes just 800m from Harvey’s brewery, The Dorset – formerly The Dorset Arms – is Harvey’s flagship pub.
Originally dating back to 1690, it underwent a complete refurbishment in 2006 and now offers fine dining and bed and breakfast accommodation as well as a friendly pub atmosphere.
Paul & Lesley and their team offer a warm welcome to their pub restaurant with rooms.
There is a large yet cosy bar area with separate snug bar (with a Toads table, a traditional Sussex game) and a separate restaurant.
The spacious garden patio at the back overlooks the brewery and smoking and non-smoking areas are well spaced. A public car park – free after 6pm – is just across the road and Lewes railway station is within walking distance.

The Dorset has a great reputation for excellent cuisine and you can enjoy freshly cooked food, largely from local suppliers and seasonal ingredients served at lunchtime and in the evenings in the bar and The Restaurant (the latter with a Fine Dining menu on Friday and Saturday evenings), a bar snack menu at lunchtime and an extensive gastro menu in both dining areas at lunchtimes and on non-Fine Dining evenings.
Fish and seafood daily choices are a speciality of The Dorset. Sunday roasts are popular too. Harvey’s regular and seasonal ales are served on tap as well as several draught ciders and there’s an extensive wine list.
Bed & Breakfast Accomodation
Upstairs are six double en-suite rooms named after notable characters in Lewes’s history such as Thomas Paine and Simon de Montfort. Two of the rooms can become family rooms and all offer a comfortable and peaceful night’s sleep followed by a full English or continental breakfast, included in the competitive rate. Rooms have a pass card to enable guests to come and go via a separate entrance at their convenience if they so wish. Corporate rates are available.
