By the end of the eighties it had become obvious that the old theatre was struggling to accommodate ever more demanding productions and also the public demand for tickets.
In 1987 George Christie announced the idea of building a completely new opera house with the following criteria: the new theatre would have to blend into its surroundings and yet be a building of its time; it was to have an enlarged auditorium and yet retain the intimate quality of the original theatre; the acoustic had to be of the highest quality; and the facilities for staff, singers and audience needed to be improved.
The new Glyndebourne theatre opened in 1994 on the same calendar date and with the same opera, namely May 28th and Le nozze di Figaro, precisely sixty years later than the original Theatre.
The new operatic theatre, has since won many awards for the quality of the architecture. It is built from imperial size handmade bricks, and the horseshoe shaped auditorium has been crafted out of century-old pitch pine, which has been fashioned into elegant curves.

The Theatre Gardens
The theatre gardens open at 3pm (2pm on Sundays) to opera ticket holders only. These are private gardens and all users are asked to respect them as such.
