True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum, close to the centre of King’s Lynn, provides a unique insight into what was once a thriving fishing community in Lynn.
True's Yard is now at the heart of all that remains of King's Lynn's old fishing community after the slum clearances of the 1930's & 1950's. The True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum is one of the most successful independent charitable trusts in existence and is recognised by English heritage as grade II listed for it's smokehouse and buildings.
The True's Yard group of buildings comprises 2 tiny cottages, one modelled on the 1850's and the other on the 1920's, offering a fascinating insight into family life in this unique corner of Lynn, the "Northend". There is also a smithy and the recently discovered smokehouse is the last one remaining in the area.
Amongst the many artefacts and exhibitions in True's Yard, the most imposing has to be the fully restored fishing smack 'Activity' built at the turn of the last century by King's Lynn boat builders, the Worfolks.
A visit to True's Yard can be combined with a guided tour of nearby Pilot Street and St. Nicholas Chapel to learn more about family and social life in the hard and sometimes dangerous, North End.
True's Yard is also a centre for schools and education as well as children's school holiday events and activities. Family history archives are available to researchers at True's Yard and the unique sound archive allows local people to add their memories of growing up and living in King's Lynn.
Rooms available for hire at True's Yard include a computer suite, boasting 12 flat screen computers all with Microsoft Office installed and connected to broadband with a large projection screen for demonstration and lecture work.
Also available for hire is a conference or meeting room capable of seating up to 40 people and complete with a 50" plasma screen, surround sound system, laptop connections and broadband access.
Of course, a visit to True's Yard wouldn't be complete without a visit to the gift shop and the traditional tea room, where drinks and light snacks are available.
