This scam starts with a phone call or email from individuals who claim to work for computer software companies.
The contact advises that there's a problem with the user’s computer and that they can offer a security check.
The individual then gains access to the computer - this gives them access to personal information held on the computer, including account log-in information and bank details, which can be used to commit fraud.
Victims can also end up being asked to pay for the ‘fixes’ the fraudster has made to their computer.
If you receive a scam call or email like this you can report it to Action Fraud via their online fraud reporting tool or to Consumer Direct via their online reporting form
