Is your eCommerce site under-performing?

Ever wondered why two apparently similar shopping sites have different levels of success? One important factor is the ability of a site to be visible on search engines.

Online shoppers do one of two things – browse or buy. Browsers use broad generic words or phrases to search for product categories e.g. “handbags”. Buyers use specific keywords to find the exact product they are looking for e.g. “large black leather shoulder bag”.

If you understand that basic principle you’re at the start line to improving your sales. You can help shoppers find your products with a well thought out keyword strategy.

4 Ways Keywords can help your online sales:

1. Multiple Categorisation:

  • List a product under as many categories as are relevant
  • Give each category its own landing page
  • Avoid duplicate content by creating a single, unique URL for each product page – no matter what category the product is listed under, its URL should always be the same

2. Keyword Rich Meta Details:
Optimise the titles and descriptions that appear in search engine results. This is achieved by embedding keywords and targeted descriptions into meta details. Meta details can be viewed in the source code of your website and will display as below on a search results page.

3. Body Copy:

  • Include keywords in the headings and sub headings of the document
  • Minimum 300 words per page
  • Primary keywords should be repeated 2-3 times in body copy

4. Image Alt Tags:

  • Describe the content of the image
  • Give images keyword rich names Use
