How an Osteopath can help you and your family?

(Call Kendal  01539 728444 for further details).

Many people when they are looking to find an osteopath often wonder what other conditions an osteopath can help. Osteopathy can offer treatment for a wide range of conditions.

For many people osteopathy is associated with the treatment of spinal problems. Treatment to the spine is highly effective and beneficial bringing relief to disc pain, sciatica, muscle and ligament pain in addition to postural problems. However osteopaths offer treatments for many conditions other than those for back pain, joint pain and neck problems.

For example, did you know that osteopathic treatment is very effective for migraine-headaches? Cranial osteopathy in particular is a particularly powerful, relaxing and effective method of treatment for such a problem. By looking at the tensions both within the skull itself and those tensions arising from the neck and the rest of the spine, osteopathy can be a very effective treatment for migraine headache.

Babies with colic (excess crying) benefit from osteopathic treatment which can ease the strains and tensions from the birth process. As the babe grows into a toddler hyperactivity can develop and later, bedwetting can also be the consequence of excess trauma from the birth process. Quite commonly a few gentle cranial osteopathic treatments can help all these childhood conditions

considerably. (Cranial osteopathy is so gentle it is safely used for all ages: newborn babies up to the very elderly.

Fatigue and tiredness can be helped by osteopathic treatment as the circulation can be assisted, tensions release from the nervous system and stress in the body reduced. Digestion can be assisted by treatment to the abdomen and rib cage in addition to the helping the bowels by easing mechanical tensions in the pelvic region.

Can osteopathy help arthritis? This is quite a common question I get asked. There are two types of arthritis. The most common is osteo-arthritis. Osteo-arthritis is a degenerative condition of the joint surfaces which we tend to associate with the more mature age groups. The hip is very common site for osteo-arthritis although it can happen in almost any joint. Osteopathic treatment for this condition is aimed at reducing the pressure to the joint surfaces which are suffering from excess pressure, wear and tear. Osteopathic treatment to improve the mobility of the affected joint and nearby joints helps to reduce pressure and hence the discomfort. In the same way that a car mechanic cannot make your car any younger, they can make your car run more smoothly and last much longer, so osteopathy can help your body be more mechanically efficient and more comfortable. The less common form of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis, also known as RA. RA is an active inflammatory condition where the body is ‘fighting itself’ causing painful swelling and tenderness of the affected joints. Osteopathic treatment for RA is less effective although can still offer some relief depending on the severity and how long the condition has been present.

Stress as already mentioned can be helped significantly by osteopathy. Grinding of the teeth (bruxism), hunched shoulders, excess sweating, tiredness and poor sleep quality, tight muscles, and aching joints, and high blood pressure can be among the physical expressions of stress. Psychological expressions can be irritability (towards self or others) anger, short temper and lack of tolerance, being argumentative and a general sense that you are out of balance.
