As we all have been aware, the freezing conditions that have brought parts of the UK to a halt for weeks have subsided. But how have our local birds and wildlife coped? What's the best way to help them during cold winters?
The best food to put out out for birds include sunflower seeds and nuts, which are very are nutritious. Alternatively, kitchen scraps such as over ripe apples and pears, fat, bacon rind and anything with dried fruit are great food sources for wild birds. They are also an excellent way to recycle your food waste! Water is as important as food, if not more so; its definitely advisable to check that their water feeders are not iced over.
Hull's East Park rangers have also kept a watchful eye on the wild birds too, and are encouraging visitors to look after the feathered friends who are visiting their gardens.
East Park manager Martin Coss said: "Even though the extreme weather conditions may be behind us, garden birds still need extra help in finding food and water in winter, and need to be fed regularly and in the same place so they know where to find food."
If you need a little more inspiration you can come along to East Park and make your own bird feeders using pine cones, fats and food scraps on Sunday 31 January. This event is suitable for all ages and you welcome to drop in between 10.30 am and 11.25am
