LBT MILKING FILMS THIS SEASON
The next film to be screened at LBT will be Milk starring Sean Penn on Tuesday 7 July.
Penn won an Oscar for his portrayal in this biographical film as politician and gay rights activist Harvey Milk. As the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in America, he was a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. In 1978, one year after this election, Harvey is shot and killed by a former city supervisor.
Milk is from acclaimed director Gus Van Sant whose credits include Good Will Hunting and Elephant and also stars Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) and James Franco (Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3).
There have been several attempts to make a film about Harvey Milk’s life following the Oscar-winning 1984 documentary of his life and aftermath of his assassination entitled The Times of Harvey Milk.
Milk received huge acclaim when it was released and received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. It went on to win two, one for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Sean Penn and Best Original Screenplay for Dustin Lance Black.
Just before the screening of Milk, there will be the re-scheduled screening of French film Entre les Murs (The Class) on Thursday 2 July. Entre les Murs was originally billed to show on Thursday 11 June but has now been put back to this date in July.
LBT films continue with Woody Allen’s latest film Vicky Cristina Barcelona on Thursday 6th August and more films for the autumn season will be announced in July.
