I first introduced you to in-line magnetic filters for central heating systems in my bestof blog article ‘Heating Systems – use of magnetic filters’ on the 10th March 2010.  Since then I have received a number of queries following that article about these filters.  It would appear that many of you would like to have a clearer understanding of what they do and how they work.  So let’s see if we can help in this article with the aid of a few diagrams below, courtesy of my preferred supplier FERNOX.

The FERNOX in-line filter is one of the fastest and simplest filters to both install and clean once it has been installed.  The patented technology of this in-line filter harnesses the combined effects of hydro-cyclonic action (think Dyson vacuum cleaners) coupled with a simple magnet!  The result is an exceptionally efficient filter that will remove both magnetic (metal particles) and non-magnetic particles (sludge) from your central heating system.

Cleaning the in-line magnetic filter just couldn't be simpler; the filter assembly is isolated using the valve fittings and then the magnet can be removed and cleaned with no mess or fuss in seconds.  Solid non-magnetic particles caught in the trap through the hydro-cyclonic action can then be removed with equal simplicity from the lower drain valve.

Fitting the in-line filter is also made simple since it is compatible with both horizontal and vertical pipe work meaning that the unit can be kept close to the wall.

My article of the 10th March outlined the main benefits of fitting such a filter when installing a new boiler, which are:

  • the removal of metallic particles and iron oxide sludge deposits not removed by power flushing before installation
  • prolonging the life of the boiler and associated controls, pump and zone valves by capturing any remaining or new debris in the system
  • improving the general efficiency of the boiler and as such aiding energy conservation.

Although, fitting an in-line magnetic filter is not exclusive to just new boilers, they can also be fitted to and benefit existing central heating systems.

The diagrams below should help you to appreciate the simplicity of this excellent device but if you need further information on the in-line magnetic filters or help and guidance with any other plumbing or gas installation matter then do please contact me Roy Lee on 01455 268 676.
