Welcome to the Hertford blog.
With help from the County Council’s Locality Grant scheme Hertford Museum has just launched its new sound guide specially recorded for blind and partially sighted users.
The portable guide takes visitors around the museum with the help of strategically placed large print and Braille numbers to help orientate the user. The soundstore machines were supplied by the RNIB and offer simple to operate /easy to feel controls with spoken instructions on use. The recorded text explores the theme of each case and describes how to navigate around them and which part of the case to look at to locate specially described objects.
Pioneer user of the new guide, Sue Gilkes, says ” It’s great to have a local museum picking up the challenge of presenting its collections for blind users – we can gain a lot of enjoyment from simply listening to object descriptions in the context of themed displays. The collections at the museum are certainly very rich!”
