Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust was established in 1995/6 to support the cathedral in the restoration and conservation of its historic fabric, to secure the future of its internationally renowned choir and to support other stand-alone projects.

Funds are raised to achieve this through a variety of means ranging from a programme of vibrant and exciting events in Herefordshire, Shropshire, London and elsewhere; a rolling-programme of applications to trusts, foundations and the lottery; a programme of big-gifts and regular giving; and a legacy campaign on behalf of the Chapter and Friends of the Cathedral, as well as our own choral and fabric investment funds.

We have many supporters in the diocese from Ross on Wye, where we meet with Gloucester and Monmouth diocese, to Bridgnorth in the north east, all who like to get involved in Perpetual Trust events along with other cathedral services, concerts and events. .

Each year over £250,000 has to be raised. Recent fabric work has included the re-facing of the east end of the Lady Chapel ('… one of the finest examples of work anywhere in the country' English Heritage) (£1.3 million) and the re-roofing and replacement of the pinnacles of the central tower (£600,000). Work is currently underway on a six-year, £850,000 restoration of the south nave clerestory. This current project is jointly funded by The Wolfson Foundation/English Heritage.

Support is also given to provide choristerships and funding for the cathedral's choir, where a choral tradition can be traced back to the 7th century as Bishop Putta, who founded the See of Hereford, was 'regarded as a fine exponent of Roman chant'. That tradition has continued through until today with the choir regularly appearing on national radio and television, touring internationally and being involved in a number of major concerts. At the heart of their music, however, is still daily worship and up to eight choral services are sung each week.

A major project also being supported by the Trust is a multi-million pound restoration of the Cathedral Close, the green lung at the heart of the city. The project will address everything from new draining and service ducts through to improved road surfaces and architectural lighting. The works will be completed by 2011 with the very generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and many other friends of the cathedral.

HRH The Prince of Wales became Patron of the Perpetual Trust in 2004, after many years of private support, and has hosted a number of receptions, dinners and concerts over the time of his involvement. His Royal Highness remains an enthusiastic supporter of our work.
