Loddon Brewery Ltd - one of the UK's leading brewers of glorious real ale near Henley on Thames
Loddon Brewery - for the finest real ale in Henley-on-Thames and beyond
Henley-on-Thames is lucky enough to have one of the UK's leading small brewers right on its doorstep.
Lovers of real ale needn't travel very far at all to savour the delights of a top quality home produced beer and those further afield now ask for it by name.
The Loddon Brewery, situated on the rural estate of Lord Phillimore in the picturesque village of Dunsden Green near Henley-on-Thames, is a family run company with a very close knit team of seven employees.
This award-winning brewery was founded by Chris and Vanessa Hearn in 2002 and brewing commenced in 2003.
Chris and Vanessa's aim has remained the same since the outset - to produce a top quality product whilst maintaining the highest levels of customer service. This has led them to become known as one the country's leading small brewers.
As a family run brewery, the company is heavily involved with the local community in and around Henley-on-Thames. Not just known for their top quality ales, they also sponsor a range of local sports teams and events in the local area.
About the brewery
It took Chris and Vanessa several months of searching before they found a suitable building for the brewery of their dreams. Until one day they came across an old brick and flint grain store on the main site of Phillimore Farms in pretty Dunsden Green, a village that's equidistant between Henley-on-Thames and Reading.
It took three months of extensive renovation work to transform the barn into the working brewery house that stands today and another two weeks to install their state-of-the-art custom brewery plant.
They now have a 20 barrel brewing plant that's capable of producing up to 100 brewers barrels (28,800 pints) of beer every week!
Recently, they've carried out some more building work to increase the size of the brewery with the aim to increase fermentation capacity in 2010. This will allow them to brew an extra 50 brewers barrels (14,400 pints) per week for lovers of fine ale in Henley-on-Thames and throughout the UK.
The Loddon Brewery pride themselves on only using five basic raw materials - water, maris, hops, inverted sugar and their own strain of yeast. Even their waste products are put to good use with spent grains collected by a local farmer for cattle feed and the hops used by local gardeners for their allotments.

There are six core Loddon Brewery beers available all year round including:
Hoppit Classic Bitter (3.5% ABV): The predominant hops in Hoppit are East Kent Goldings which traditionally have a Seville Orange marmalade flavour. As well as Pale Ale malt, Hoppit also contains dark invert sugar which gives the beer its smooth taste. This is an excellent fairly bitter session ale.
Hullabaloo (4.2% ABV): English Fuggles impart a dry, herby bitterness which is balanced by the distinctly biscuity flavour of Crystal and Amber malts. A Best Bitter.
Ferryman's Gold (4.4% ABV): Brewed using Slovenian Stryian Golding hops, (originally an English variety, which have been grown in Slovenia for the last 100 years), which impart a zesty lime flavour. The mix of Cara malt and Wheat malt give a smooth, creamy body to the beer.
Bamboozle (4.8% ABV): A strong pale ale heavily hopped with English Goldings. The Pale ale malt gives the beer a clean and crisp background.
Russet (4.5% Draught 4.7% Bottle) "Ruby red, brewed with barley, oats, wheat and crystal rye".
A multi-grain red beer brewed with Barley, Wheat, Oats and Crystal Rye and hopped with Fuggles and Styrian Goldings from Slovenia to produce a beer packed with flavour and aroma.
Forbury Lion (5.5% Draught 5.5% Bottle) "A true IPA! Malty and packed with hops ".
An IPA as an IPA should be: packed with a full malty flavour and a strong complex hop finish imparted by Styrian Goldings and Fuggles
ottle
Other beers seasonably available include Hocus Pocus (December to February). This is brewed using the ever popular English Goldings with the addition of Fuggle Hops, pale and dark malts with the addition of a small amount of invert sugar. These ingredients combine to form a rich, smooth and traditional dark ale. Perfect for those winter nights!
