Henley RFC - The Background
Founded in 1930, the club has emerged from humble beginnings as old Heneleiensians (the old boys of Henley Grammar School).
Having changed its name in 1963 to Henley RFC, it has been based at the magnificent ground at Dry Leas ever since. The main playing pitch is said to be one of the best in the country and there are five other pitches of an equally high standard.
We have a ground capacity of 4,000 and our facilities are used by 24 teams of all ages as well as many schools, sports clubs and companies in the Henley-on-Thames area.
Since 2001, Henley RFC have been fielding two main senior sides - Henley Hawks 1 and Henley Hawks Alliance.
Henley Hawks has enjoyed six seasons in National 1, but were relegated to National 2 for 2005/6 and then National 3 last season. Last season, they so nearly achieved their ambition of returning to National 1 after failing by just one point to secure promotion.
In Febuary 2008, Jason Forster the former Welsh international, was appointed to turn the Hawks around. His new squad of players, with an average age of 24, are in line for promotion in 2009/10.
Henley Women's XV play in National League 1 after gaining five promotions in six years, so they've now reached the highest echelons of women's rugby in the country. There's also Henley Colts, who play in the 3 Counties League, whilst the mini junior teams aged from 7 to 17, with over 400 players, can be seen in action at Dry Leas in Henley-on-Thames every Sunday.
