St Nicholas Hospice Care is a charitable organisation that offers help and support for people in Haverhill.
St Nicholas Hospice Care is a charity providing a service for people with terminal and life-shortening illnesses and their families.
Our aim is to improve the quality of lives of patients and their families during life shortening illness and bereavement.
This can be via our inpatient Sylvan Ward or for day patients attending The Orchard Centre, both based at our headquarters in Bury St Edmunds (behind West Suffolk Hospital).
But it can also be through our skilled and dedicated Community Hospice Team which provides a specialist service caring and supporting people in their own home.
Other services include confidential and psychological support for adults via our Family Support team and our Nicky's Way programme, a bereavement and grief support programme for children and young people.
Our services are available to those living in West Suffolk and Thetford, provided by a skilled team of staff and volunteers.
A 24-hour telephone advice line - 01284 766133 - is available for all patients and family members as well as healthcare professionals, including General Practitioners, District Nurses and Carers.
St Nicholas Hospice Care - Community Hospice Team
Many people living with life-shortening illness prefer to be cared for in their own home surrounded by loved ones and comforting possessions.
Thanks to the expertise and dedication of the Community Hospice Team at St Nicholas Hospice Care, this has been possible for more than 1,500 people in their own homes.
Launched 12 months ago, the team offers specialist end of life care while providing valuable respite to family members. In Haverhill and the surrounding area, the Nurse Specialist is Caroline Wade.
The Community Hospice Team was set up last March to give people across West Suffolk and Thetford greater choice in how and where they wanted to be treated at the end of their lives.
Its immediate future was secured in January with a £316,545 grant from the Big Lottery Fund which covered core running costs of the service.
The Community Hospice Team consists of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurses and Nursing Assistants, a Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Doctors, Social Workers, Complimentary Therapists, Chaplains, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Psychological Therapist, Befrienders and Volunteers.
The Team works together to provide support and advice for patients and their family members, working in partnership with local GPs, District Nurses and Social Carers.
St Nicholas Hospice Care - Haverhill shop
Retail is an important fundraising element for St Nicholas Hospice Care with nine shops across West Suffolk and Thetford.
One of these is in Haverhill High Street where a large selection of high-quality, low-cost goods are on sale including clothes, furniture, bric-a-brac, books and toys.
The shop is staffed by a shop manager and a large team of volunteers under the direction of our Retail Operations Manager.
As well as providing a quality home for bargains through its high street shops, the Hospice is always in need of donations of good quality furniture, clothes and other items.
Best of all, larger items can be picked up from anywhere in the Haverhill area so if you are looking to replace your three-piece suite or are maybe thinking about a house clearance, give the Hospice a call.
Thanks to generous donations and the sterling work of volunteers and retail staff alike, the shops provide a valuable source of income for the Hospice bringing in more than £250,000 a year.
The Haverhill shop can be found at 61a High Street and is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 9.30am and 4.30pm, as well as Wednesdays between 9.30am and 1pm. It can be contacted on 01440 712992.
