Lent is something that comes from Christianity.  It starts on Ash Wednesday and lasts about 6 weeks (40 days) till Easter. Lent, in 2016, is from the 10th Feb to the 26th March.

Today, Lent is now a time where people give up something they may consider to be a vice – for example chocolate, alcohol, meat, smoking....  some even go as far as donating the money they’d usually spend on such vices to a charity.  Harrogate has several worthy charities worth giving to.

Lent is also a time for prayer and reflection and spiritual awareness ending at Easter, which is a time for celebration.  You can pray at home or go to one of several churches that Harrogate has to offer.

Keeping to your decision to quit a vice can be hard, did you know it takes 21 days to form a habit? You may find that you may not want to go back to doing/eating whatever you have up for lent at the end of the 40 days.

Here are some tips to help you stick to whatever it is you are giving up for lent:

  • Visualise your achievement

  • Buddy up with a friend

  • Track your progress, know that it’s only for 40 days

  • Reward yourself for keeping to your goals

  • Don’t give yourself a hard time if you slip up, but aim to get back on track

Here’s a great list of things to give up for lent.
